Lee Chong Wei is the former World Champion Badminton player from Malaysia. A movie was made, drawn from inspiration of his life before his achievements. This weekend 2018-09-21 the world learnt that he faces early stage nose cancer. I wish him a speedy recovery. But I am also amazed at the use of “early stage” in headline reporting.

First up, disclaimers:

  1. This write up will be a dated one, so is the information herein.
  2. This write up is not exhaustive to cover every insurance company.
  3. This write up focuses only on Cancer, not any other listed illnesses covered.

The normal critical illness definition for Major Cancers has been standardised by regulator and as you can see from the above, those conditions need to be fulfilled for that lump sum payout.

The following illustrates differing wordings of the same Early Critical illness coverage for Cancer:

Normal Critical illness Coverage (Earthly Pricing) is different from Early Stage Critical illness Coverage (Sky Pricing) as a subcategory. There is also Multi-pay Critical illness Coverage (Heavenly Pricing) but that is reserved for another occasion. It is important to compare appropriately otherwise its akin to comparing apple and watermelon, same (genre of coverage) but different (mechanics and definitions). That is the truth. Which area of coverage is more meaningful to you?
